Overview and sources — Casement window

The moving window section, called the sash, is hinged at the side and opens outward. Consider it when ventilation and crank operation matter in daily use.

Overview and sources — Awning window

The sash is hinged at the top and opens outward at the bottom. Consider it alongside a fixed window or within a horizontal layout.

Overview and sources — Picture window

A fixed window does not open. It frames the view; plan another way to ventilate the room.

Overview and sources — Sliding window

The moving window section slides sideways within the frame. Consider this type where an outward-opening window would get in the way.

Overview and sources — Hung window

A sash slides up and down within the frame. A single-hung window has a moving lower sash; a double-hung window has two moving sashes.

Overview and sources — Two-panel patio door

A two-panel sliding layout combines a view outside with access to the patio. Choose the opening side around the way you move through the room.

Overview and sources — Three-panel patio door

Three glazed panels shape the view from the living room. Panel count alone does not determine how wide the doorway will open.
