AROUND THE WINDOW

One opening.Three decisions.

The edge of the façade. What gets replaced. The detail inside the room. Three connected choices to understand separately as you plan a project around your home.

Concept diagrams, not to scale. Not installation plans or specific models.

One window, distinct finishing choices An original exploded concept drawing separates the exterior surround, the glazed window and the interior casing with a stool. These are illustrative finish layers, not a construction detail.

  • Window and frame
  • Interior casing with stool
The exterior, the installation, the interior. The drawings explain the differences. An assessment confirms the detail that fits each opening.

01 / OUTSIDE

Where the windowmeets the façade.

The surround can blend in or give the opening definition. Its appearance alone does not reveal the replacement method behind it.

Aluminum capping over exterior wood trim A window with pale exterior trim. A separate conceptual profile shows a thin folded aluminum cover wrapping an existing wood trim block.
  • Folded aluminum capping
  • Existing wood trim beneath the capping

COVER THE SURROUND

Aluminum capping

A formed outer cover

Bent aluminum covers exposed surfaces around the window. The surround follows the substrate and the intended finish.

Keep in mind

The substrate must be sound. Capping does not repair deteriorated wood.

A discreet exterior frame relationship A slim window surround sits within the existing exterior trim. A callout identifies the relationship with existing trim or a J-channel where applicable, without claiming that the frame is flush with the facade.
  • Meets existing trim or a J-channel, where applicable

MEET THE EXISTING FINISH

Flush-looking finish

A discreet perimeter

The window meets the existing trim or cladding. J-channel may form part of the connection where the façade and window system allow.

Keep in mind

“Flush” describes the intended appearance here. The actual connection needs assessment.

A wider, projecting brickmould surround A broad exterior surround frames the window. A side-profile inset highlights its projection from the facade. The profile is conceptual.
  • A broader, projecting surround: conceptual profile

DEFINE THE OPENING

Projecting brickmould

Exterior perimeter trim

A more pronounced exterior surround frames the window and meets the cladding. It may be integrated or added, depending on the window system.

Keep in mind

The profile, width and projection shape the character of the façade.

02 / THE INSTALLATION METHOD

What gets replaced.What stays.

FenXtra generally favours full-frame replacement where the opening allows. Frame condition, connections to the wall and finishes worth preserving guide the recommendation.

Full-frame replacement

The old frame is removed

Full-frame replacement scope The entire old window frame is shown separately in a dashed outline marked removed. Beside it, a complete new window and frame occupy the opening.
  • Entire old frame removed
  • New window and complete frame in the building opening

The old window and its frame are removed. The opening becomes accessible for assessment and any necessary connection work.

Replaced
The window and its old frame.
Retained
Building elements compatible with the planned work.

To discussAffected finishes and any repairs need to be included in the agreed scope.

Interior return retained

Described as “split-frame”

New window with retained interior jamb lining The new complete window frame is shown in charcoal in front of a stone-colored interior jamb lining. Only that interior lining is identified as retained. This is a scope illustration, not a definition of a proprietary frame system.
  • Only the interior jamb lining is shown as retained
  • New window with complete frame

Some configurations allow a sound interior jamb extension or return to remain. The assessment identifies the exact retained piece and its connection to the new window.

Replaced
The assembly agreed after assessment.
Retained
A selected interior portion, if sound and compatible.

To discussPreserving interior lining does not necessarily mean retaining the old window frame.

Insert replacement

Insert / pocket replacement

Insert window inside a retained old frame A charcoal new window sits inside a broad stone-colored existing main frame. The retained old main frame and the smaller new insert frame are separately identified.
  • Existing main frame retained
  • New insert frame inside the old frame

The new window fits inside the retained old frame. That frame must be sound and compatible with the selected window system.

Replaced
The window within that frame.
Retained
The existing window frame assessed as sound.

To discussThe added frame can reduce visible glass. The difference depends on the profiles and dimensions selected.

An older home or a frame embedded in concrete?

Original woodwork worth preserving or a frame embedded in concrete may make an insert worth assessing. Neither the home’s age nor the basement type settles the choice. Condition, moisture, connections and usable opening still need review.

03 / INSIDE

The detail thatfinishes the room.

Start with the composition of the surround, then look at the moulding profile. They are two distinct style choices.

Casing with four mitred corners Four flat casing pieces surround a window. Clear diagonal joints meet at each of the four corners.
  • Diagonal joints at all four corners

A FRAME ON ALL FOUR SIDES

Four mitred corners

Casing surrounds the window continuously. Its ends meet diagonally at all four corners.

The same composition can use a simple or a more detailed profile.

Projecting window stool and separate apron Interior casing meets a projecting horizontal stool. A separate flat apron sits immediately below the stool, and both parts are identified.
  • Projecting stool
  • Separate decorative apron below the stool

A BASE THAT PROJECTS

Stool and apron

An interior sill, called a stool, projects into the room. A separate apron finishes the area below, with the side casings meeting the stool.

The stool is the horizontal surface. The apron underneath is a separate piece.

More lines to explore.

Style directions to discuss with FenXtra, with materials and feasibility still to be confirmed.

Simple flat casing Simple straight-edged casing boards surround a window, with a clean flat face and restrained proportions.
  • Straight-edged, flat casing

Flat casing

A simple profile and straight lines for a restrained surround.

Craftsman casing with an extended head board Straight side casings meet an independent horizontal head board. The head extends beyond both sides, creating a clearly legible Craftsman composition.
  • Head board extending beyond the side casings

A defined head casing

A top board that extends beyond the sides to emphasize the surround.

A drywall return with no visible applied casing The painted wall turns into the window opening with simple shaded returns. No applied casing surrounds the opening.
  • Drywall return with no visible applied casing

Drywall return

An opening without visible applied casing, depending on the window system and wall finish.

04 / FOR YOUR HOME

The right answerstarts on site.

Two windows in the same home may call for different approaches. These four topics make the assessment and quote easier to understand.

  1. Condition before style

Frame, substrate, moisture and connections: what can remain, and what needs attention?

  2. The pieces to preserve

Woodwork, interior returns, siding and trim: exactly which piece stays at each opening?

  3. The result to compare

Visible glass, usable opening, exterior projection and interior finish: what will the proposed project look like?

  4. The written scope

Removal, connections, trim, wall repairs and painting: which work is included or needs separate planning?

Installation details must suit the product, manufacturer instructions and building conditions.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few useful distinctions.

Does brickmould mean a full-frame installation?

No. Brickmould is exterior trim. To understand the replacement method, clarify which elements of the old window are removed and which remain.

Can aluminum cover a damaged piece?

Capping does not correct deterioration. The substrate’s condition and any moisture issues need assessment before the finish is defined.

Does a flush-looking finish always use J-channel?

No. The connection depends on the cladding, existing trim and window system. “Flush” describes a discreet appearance here, not a universal installation method.

Is split-frame the same as an insert?

Not necessarily. In this guide, FenXtra’s description refers to selective interior preservation that needs confirmation. An insert retains the old window frame that receives the new window. The exact retained component must be identified.

Does a stool always have a bullnose?

No. A stool is a horizontal piece; bullnose describes its rounded edge. A stool can use a different profile and can have a separate apron underneath.

Are painting and wall repairs included?

The style does not establish what is included. Ask for the supply and installation of trim, preparation, painting and any repairs to be specified in the quote.

Sources and the limits of these drawings

These explanations draw on manufacturer and building-science references. The links explain concepts; they do not confirm a brand offered by FenXtra or a product’s compatibility with your home. US references are not local building-code requirements.

The preferred approach and “split-frame” description come from FenXtra’s description of its work. Retained components, connections to existing finishes and feasible styles must be confirmed for each opening.
