Casement window

The moving window section, called the sash, is hinged at the side and opens outward. Consider it when ventilation and crank operation matter in daily use.

THE ESSENTIALS

Is it right for your home?

Strengths

  • An operable sash for ventilation where you want it.
  • Crank operation to try at your actual counter height.
  • Can be considered alongside a fixed section to balance view and opening.

Considerations

  • An open sash projects into the outdoor space.
  • The handle must remain accessible behind furniture and coverings.
  • Opening direction needs to account for nearby obstacles.

A PROJECT IN PICTURES

Opening starts with reaching the control.

In this bay, the handles sit at the bottom of the glass, behind a deep sill. For your casement window, consider the control height and what will sit in front of it: furniture, a counter or a plant.

Composition example. The photograph shows closed windows; the diagram explains the casement movement.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Before you choose.

How should I choose the hinge side?

Start with how you will use it: reaching the controls, outdoor obstructions and neighbouring sashes. Then confirm the direction on a drawing with the viewing side labelled. A verbal description alone can be misunderstood.

Can a casement replace a sliding window?

It is an option to assess. The outward swing, wall construction and available sizes need checking. Use the site visit to compare visible glass area and the position of the controls as well.

Is any casement suitable for a basement bedroom?

No. The opening type alone is insufficient. Vaillancourt documents a removable-mullion configuration, for example, but the exact model, clear opening, window well and installation must be assessed for the specific project.

Must I open it fully to ventilate?

Not necessarily. Set the opening for the conditions and the manufacturer’s instructions, keeping the sash clear of obstacles. Air movement also depends on wind and the home’s other openings.

Room scenarios, manufacturers and options

CHOOSE FOR YOUR ROOM

The right casement, in the right place.

Choosing a casement also means picturing the everyday movement: reaching the crank, opening without blocking a path, then closing and locking comfortably. The hinge side can make a real difference in a kitchen, home office or grouped window layout.

SCENARIO 1

Above a kitchen sink

Try the movement with the actual counter depth in mind. You should be able to reach the crank without leaning on the sink. Check the faucet, blinds and items on the sill against the location of the controls.

SCENARIO 2

A home office with a view

An operable section close to the desk can make ventilation easier without moving furniture. Consider the desk’s position too: glass divisions and blinds shape the view from your chair, not just the look of the exterior.

SCENARIO 3

Beside a large fixed section

Draw both side windows open before choosing the hinges. Check the swing, access to controls and balance of the section widths rather than automatically specifying two identical sashes.

THE WINDOW IN YOUR ROOMPLAN VIEW

Three details around the counter.

  1. The outdoor walking route

Draw the sash open beside the circulation area. Label the hinge side on a clearly identified indoor or outdoor view.

  2. Reaching the crank

Try the movement at the actual counter depth. Leave room around the faucet and blinds to reach both the crank and lock.

  3. Both glass surfaces

Ask for a cleaning demonstration for the selected model. Do not assume an open sash makes the whole exterior face accessible.

Use these scenarios to prepare for a visit. Height, dimensions, room constraints and the selected product determine what will actually suit the opening.

THE OPENING TYPE IS ONLY A START

Two manufacturers. Options to work through.

Casement describes a movement. Frame material, section layout and glazing are separate choices to work through for each opening.

Vaillancourt

PVC or hybrid

A single casement or a grouped layout.

Vaillancourt presents PVC and hybrid casements, including multi-section layouts.

  • Compare a single unit, a pair of opening sections or a combination with fixed glass.
  • Request frame sightlines and opening directions for the selected configuration.

VDK Ultra

uPVC

Crank operation, with glazing to choose.

The Ultra collection presents an outward-opening uPVC casement operated by a crank.

  • The manufacturer page presents double- and triple-glazing options.
  • Confirm glazing and dimensions on the specification for the proposed product.

Installation and maintenance

Check on site

  • Check outdoor clearance and opening direction.
  • Inspect the existing frame and finishing transitions.
  • Check handle positions against planned blinds.

Planning for upkeep

  • Ask for a demonstration of access to both glass surfaces.
  • Confirm care instructions for the opening mechanism, seals and screen.
