A CLOSER LOOK AT THE GLASS

Insulated glass
replacement.

A cloudy view between the panes? FenXtra offers insulated glass replacement. The frame can sometimes stay in place, after the opening has been assessed.

INSIDE THE GLASS UNIT

A sealed unit, in section.

01 / OBSERVE

Where is the fog?

The location of the moisture matters. These three situations call for different assessments.

WITHIN THE SEALED UNIT

Between the panes

Fog or droplets inside the glass unit may indicate a failed seal. Have the cause confirmed and the possibility of replacing the sealed unit assessed.

A sign to have assessed.

ON THE INTERIOR SURFACE

On the room side

Humid indoor air can condense on cold glass. Humidity and air circulation need consideration; this sign alone does not establish a faulty sealed unit.

Identify the surface before concluding.

ON THE EXTERIOR SURFACE

On the outside

Dew can form outside depending on glass temperature and weather conditions. This alone does not establish a failure of the insulated glass unit.

Also note the time of day.

Also mention cracks, water entering the opening or difficulty opening the window. These observations may involve other window components.

02 / DEFINE THE RIGHT SCOPE

The glass. The frame.
Two questions.

A sealed unit combines glass panes and a sealed space, held together with a spacer and seals. It is one component of a window, rather than the entire window.

Replace the glass unit

The work concerns the insulated glass unit. The frame and other components can remain only if their condition and configuration allow it.

To specify

Compatible glass, retained components and related work.

Consider the whole window

The work concerns the complete window. It may be worth considering if the frame’s condition, operation or your project calls for broader work.

To specify

The assembly being replaced, installation and finishing.

Can the frame stay?

A possibility to assess, opening by opening.

03 / TAKE THE NEXT STEP

A well-prepared
request.

These discussion points help connect what you have noticed to a proposal that fits the opening.

  1. Describe what you notice

Identify the affected openings, rooms and the conditions in which the change appears.

    Before the conversation
    • Number of openings and floor level
    • Fog, droplets, a crack or another change
    • When it started and when it occurs
  2. Have the opening assessed

Have the glass, frame, seals and drainage examined. Dimensions and compatibility need to be verified on site.

    Questions to ask
    • Has the cause been confirmed?
    • Which existing components can stay?
    • Is any related work needed?
  3. Clarify the quote

Have the proposed glass, retained components and included work specified for each opening.

    What to put in writing
    • Glass specifications and quantities
    • Included removal, installation, seals and finishing
    • Applicable conditions and arrangements to confirm

A photo can help locate the opening. It does not replace an on-site assessment or measurements.
