Sliding window

The moving window section slides sideways within the frame. Consider this type where an outward-opening window would get in the way.

THE ESSENTIALS

Is it right for your home?

Strengths

  • Opening without an outward swing.
  • A horizontal movement to try in realistic conditions.
  • Configurations with one or two moving sashes to discuss.

Considerations

  • The whole glazed area does not become a clear opening.
  • The track is part of regular upkeep.
  • Try sliding the window, especially if it will be high on the wall.

A PROJECT IN PICTURES

After the movement, consider privacy.

A black frame and frosted glass form an opening in the brickwork here. For your sliding-window project, the choice of glass is another decision to consider for the room and views from outside.

Glazing example only; this photograph does not illustrate a sliding mechanism. Options depend on the selected product.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Before you choose.

What is the difference between single and double sliding?

The distinction concerns the number of movable sashes. Ask to see both versions open so you can understand which side you can use and where the panels sit during ventilation.

Does a double slider open across its full width?

Do not assume so. Sashes may overlap and some components remain in the opening. Have the actual clear opening documented if that dimension matters to your project.

Can I clean the outside glass from indoors?

Some models have a mechanism designed for this. Ask for a demonstration using the delivered product. Do not lift, remove or pivot a sash based on instructions for a different model.

Why is my sash becoming difficult to move?

First check for accessible debris in the track. If the problem continues, the mechanism or alignment may need service. Forcing the sash can make matters worse; have the cause assessed.

Room scenarios, manufacturers and options

CHOOSE FOR YOUR ROOM

A clear path. A movement to try.

A slider is worth considering where an outward-swinging sash would obstruct circulation. To choose well, look at what actually opens, how comfortable the sideways movement feels and whether you can reach the bottom track, rather than focusing only on overall width.

SCENARIO 1

Along a busy deck

Without an outward swing, the open sash does not occupy the path. Still check the lock position and indoor access: a sofa in front of the window can make operation just as awkward as an outdoor obstruction.

SCENARIO 2

A low, wide room

A horizontal arrangement can follow the shape of the wall. Compare vertical divisions with your preferred view; a frame member in the middle of your sightline will be more noticeable than it appears in a small sample.

SCENARIO 3

A basement renovation

Start with the room’s requirements, then assess the model. If an emergency escape opening is needed, clear opening, window well and access conditions must be checked together. The word “slider” establishes no compliance by itself.

What opens matters as much as width.

  1. The portion that stays glazed

Sashes overlap. Ask for an open-position drawing showing the actual clear width rather than relying on the overall width.

  2. Movement at the right height

Try the sideways movement and lock. A sash that feels easy in the showroom can be less convenient behind a sofa.

  3. A track you can reach

Leave access to the lower track to remove debris. Confirm any permitted pivoting or removal procedure for the delivered model.

Use these scenarios to prepare for a visit. Height, dimensions, room constraints and the selected product determine what will actually suit the opening.

THE OPENING TYPE IS ONLY A START

Two manufacturers. Options to work through.

Single or double sliding: start by identifying the moving sashes. Then check cleaning access and glazing options for the exact range.

Vaillancourt

PVC

Single, double and cleaning access.

Vaillancourt’s published sliding range is PVC and distinguishes single- and double-sliding versions.

  • The manufacturer describes a pivoting mechanism for cleaning.
  • Ask for a demonstration on the delivered model; do not transfer the procedure to another range.

VDK Ultra

uPVC

Horizontal movement, options to confirm.

VDK Ultra presents a uPVC slider with horizontal sash movement.

  • The manufacturer presents double- and triple-glazing choices.
  • Confirm the movable sashes and cleaning method for the proposed configuration.

Ask for it in your quote.

The number and side of movable sashes, their open position, usable clear width and cleaning method. If this opening must meet a particular requirement, have the model and installation assessed for your room.

Check on site

  • Confirm moving and fixed sections on the drawing.
  • Check access to controls and tracks.
  • Have frame and finishing details confirmed on site.

Planning for upkeep

  • Ask for a demonstration of track cleaning.
  • Check whether the chosen sashes pivot for cleaning and how to handle them.
